Abstract

The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) has created new opportunities to improve teaching and learning through personalized assistance, intelligent tutoring, automated feedback, and interactive learning. However, evidence regarding its pedagogical applications, effectiveness, and implementation challenges remains diverse. This study aims to systematically examine how AI is applied pedagogically to enhance learning outcomes, the effectiveness of these applications, and the challenges affecting their implementation. A systematic literature review was conducted following the PRISMA 2020 framework. Literature was searched through Scopus and Google Scholar for publications from 2022–2026. Following predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, 420 records were identified, screened, and assessed for eligibility, resulting in 11 articles for final analysis. Data were analyzed using descriptive and thematic synthesis. The findings indicate five major pedagogical applications of AI: personalized learning assistance, formative feedback, intelligent tutoring, collaborative and dialogic learning, and activity-based learning. AI was generally associated with improvements in academic achievement, critical thinking, writing, programming, motivation, engagement, and learning behavior. However, implementation challenges included overreliance on AI, cognitive load, information reliability, reduced originality, and difficulties in maintaining independent learning. AI can enhance learning outcomes when integrated through structured, learner-centered, and pedagogically appropriate strategies rather than used as a substitute for teachers or students’ independent cognitive processes.
